MDF Rose Engine Lathe 2.0
Controls Kit Options

We offer two controls options for the MDF Rose Engine Lathe 2.0.

Notes:

  1. Stepper motors for X, Z, and B axes are not included in the kit.
  2. Limit switches are not included in the kit.

The parts listed in other kits below are not included in this kit.

Supply Chain Shortage

Regarding the ELFOS, we are currently unable to purchase the Teensy 3.5 & 3.6 microcontrollers due to them not being available from PJRC. Communications with PJRC are that these microcontrollers will not be available until a later date ... if at all.

Spindle-Only
Stepper Motor Control Kit
ELFOS
Overview
  • This kit provides all the parts to drive the spindle with a stepper motor.
    • This kit is not able to synchronize any other movement.
  • A rotary switch is used to control the spindle speed and direction.
  • The kit's stepper motor is attached to a bracket which gets installed in the lathe's headstock.
  • The kit's electronic components are in a separate box, with the power supply (usually) installed under the lathe's bed.
  • The kit includes everything needed to drive:
    • the spindle with a stepper motor,
    • a stepper motor for movement along the Z axis1,
    • a stepper motor for movement along the X axis1, and
    • a stepper motor for movement along the B axis1,
  • It uses a touch screen to control the activity2.
  • It also allows for using limit switches to stop movement when the desired cut has been achieved.
  • The kit's spindle stepper motor is attached to a bracket which gets installed in the lathe's headstock.
  • It comes as a case which fits neatly below (or beside) the lathe's bed.

  • The curvilinear slide will attach to this controls kit.
  • The spherical slide will attach to this controls kit.
Options
  • Electronics are available two ways:
    1. An assembled kit with the Pololu already pre-programmed and wired into place.
(You will need to place the power supply in the lathe's bed, and attach the power switch)

    2. A kit you can assemble yourself.
This requires strong capabilities to assemble, program and test electronics, following the manual we have available.
  • Electronics are available two ways:
    1. An assembled kit with everything ready to go. Just plug it in and turn it on.

    2. A kit of the hard to source parts which you can assemble yourself. This allows for lower start-up cost as you can add the stepper motor drivers as you have the need.
This requires strong capabilities to assemble, program and test electronics, following the manual we have available.
Some Details
  • This option is significantly lower in cost (as there are many fewer parts), and is also much simpler to build.

  • It is based on the Pololu Tic 36v4 and is designed to drive the spindle with a stepper motor.
  • This option gives a tremendous increase in capabilities, but is also more expensive and complicated to build.

  • This system is based on:
    • Teensy microcontroller,
    • Nextion touch screen display, and
    • StepperOnline DM542T stepper motor drivers which are designed to handle plenty of current, allowing for selection from a good range of stepper motors.

Printed circuit boards (PCBs), Teensys, & Nextions: Which One to Use for ELFOS?

PCB V003

As we move forward with new versions of ELFOS, it is recommended that one getting started begin with:

Teensy 3.5 - the Teensy 4.1 is not supported by any version at this time, the Teensy 3.6 is more sensitive to voltage issues, and the Teensy 3.2 is not supported by ELFOS version 3.0.8.

5-axis, V003 printed circuit board (PCB) - there are some nice power control features introduced with this board, plus the 5th axis is nice to have. (Either the 4-axis or the 5-axis PCB will support the Teensy 4.1 once the software makes that support available.)

Nextion 7" Intelligent - the larger size is nicer to use, and at this time, the Nextion 4.3" Enhanced is not supported by ELFOS version 3.0.8.

Starting with ELFOS version 3.0.8, the hardware which is supported has changed. The items recommended above are highlighted in the table below in  green .
